Welcome to the homepage of the NGO
“Evangelische Moldovahilfe Berlin”
The non-profit organisation „Evangelische Moldovahilfe Berlin“ is a small circle of committed people from Berlin and surroundings. Our aim is to help people in need in Romania and the Republic of Moldova. We started our activities in Romania in 1985 and since 1997 we expanded the sphere of action also to the Republic of Moldova.
The guiding principle of our work is to offer “assistance to self-help”. Our activities focus on four different areas:
- Social aid
- Medical aid
- Financial support of midget projects
- Emergency aid
In the following we would like to present some of our projects.
Romania
After the Romanian Revolution, in the end of 1989, we started our activities with typical “emergency supply transports”, where we carried clothes, food and also bibles to Romania over three years. This “first aid” was strongly necessary at that time, because of the desperate social and economical situation in the country. These transports were not intended to become a permanent institution; we rather wanted to support our partners on the principle of “assistance to self-help”.
After the Romanian agricultural reform 1991 in fact many peasants had their own land, but they did not endue the equipment to use it economically efficient. They were forced to rent tractors etc. for high prices, what, in most cases, was not affordable for them.
This problem was also true for the village of Ciohorani, in the north-east of Romania. We had already been in regular contact with the local Bohemian Brethren.
Then, in 1994, they asked us to support the acquirement of a tractor plus equipment. We agreed to that pledge and until now the project is running successfully without further financial endorsement, even if there are ups and downs and sometimes financial shortages caused by larger repairs. The project is funding itself, thus the traction engine and its equipment are rented out in the village and its surroundings for favourable conditions. The money earned is used to support the poorer people in the village, e.g. through roof repair or purchase of a cow or also by, cultivating the land of poor people free of charge. In summer 2001 a ward could be established in Ciohorani out of the projects´ profits.
Romania and Republic of Moldova
Medical aid
The medical situation in Romania and Moldova has dramatically deteriorated because of the crash down of the health system after the political changes. Therefore we support rural wards to meliorate the supply of patients. We collect e.g. blood pressure meters, stethoscopes, auriscopes, laboratory equipment, sterilization, blood sugar meters, ECGs etc., to facilitate examinations and diagnoses. If new equipment needs to be purchased, we buy them on the spot, if possible, to simplify maintenance and repairs.
In Moldova and Romania we established “medicament fonds”, which are administered by nurses. In particular predicaments they provide the people with necessary medicine.
Republic of Moldova
Costangalia is situated in the south-west of Moldova, it is one of the poorest villages in the country that we know.
For a child life is not easy there: Most of the families are absolutely impoverished. Paid jobs are rare and with an average income of about 75 Euro the misery among rural families is high.
Many of them don’t have the money to make it possible for their children to attend the kindergarten. Namely in Moldova you have to pay for that. The economically ruined state cannot afford to offer this service free of charge anymore. Quite a few parents take refuge in alcoholism and are not looking after their children. The children often are left to fend for themselves, are going to seed and later have huge problems.
If the children cannot go to the kindergarten, their nutrition is deteriorating, as now often the only proper daily meal is ceased. Nobody is taking care of the children´s state of health.
Another negative aspect is: preschool education in kindergarten is a precondition for the following school attendance. So it happens that school- aged children simply are not endowed with the basic conditions for that.
Sustainable aid: KindergartenIn collaboration with the Baptist community of Costangalia we are running a kindergarten for these disadvantaged children. In April 2001 the construction of a 145 m² large, two-storied building was started on community property. Meanwhile a provisional kindergarten was established, so that the children could directly experience an improvement of their situation.
The kindergarten was made of concrete bricks and not build as clay brick house, which are typical for Moldova, because most people cannot afford to buy stones.
In September 2003 we celebrated the opening ceremony. Now 30 children are looked after in three groups. The amounting costs for one child, including personnel, catering, heating etc., run up to 40 Euro per month. We are confident that we are able to meet the relatively low overheads through support of regularly donors.
The kindergarten should be a symbol for successful collaboration, even under unfavourable conditions. We hope to give new courage and confidence to many people in the village.
The organisation in situ is solely taken on by the community of Costangalia and is working well.
Emergency aidOften we meet people in specific predicaments, therefore we sometimes make an exception in individual cases and help single persons. For example we pay essential operations, support impecunious pensioners and a family, marked by poverty and complaints, to build their house.
Financial support of midget projectsActivities, initiated by the people themselves, are not as common as in Germany. For that reason we especially like to support people, who are committed and motivated to take action. We could help a tailor and a miller to establish their own business and thus to make a living.
The projects described represent only a small part of our work. We would appreciate to inform you about more and other recent projects.
